The park layout

Islands of Adventure is arranged as a ring of distinct themed islands around a central lagoon, connected by a continuous walking path. Unlike a hub-and-spoke layout, there's no central plaza to return to between lands — you generally move around the ring in one direction or the other, which makes a rough plan of which islands to prioritise more useful here than at a park you can crisscross freely.

The themed islands

Each island has a distinct identity and its own standout attractions, ranging from wizarding-world theming to prehistoric and comic-book-inspired lands, alongside islands built around family-friendly characters and story-driven dark rides. The park is particularly well regarded among coaster and thrill-ride fans, with some of Orlando's most highly-rated rides found here rather than at the bigger-name Disney parks.

Decide your ring direction before you arrive

Because Islands of Adventure is a ring rather than a hub, doubling back to an island you skipped costs real walking time. Look at the park map in advance, pick your two or three must-do attractions, and plan a single loop direction that hits them efficiently rather than bouncing back and forth through the day.

As with Universal's other parks, arriving at opening makes the single biggest difference to your wait times, and the official app's current wait-time data is more reliable than assumptions based on a previous visit — ride lineups and popularity shift over time.
